What to look at, in order
- 1.The mandate: what the scheme is allowed to hold, and whether that fits your goal.
- 2.The benchmark: performance relative to a fair comparison, over the same period.
- 3.The period: full market cycles, not a flattering start date.
- 4.Risk: drawdowns and volatility experienced to achieve those returns.
- 5.Cost: expense ratio, exit load and tax treatment on redemption.
- 6.Consistency: rolling performance rather than a single point-to-point number.
