NAV

Net Asset Value, explained clearly

NAV is the per-unit value of a scheme on a given day. It is a price, not a measure of how good or cheap a fund is.

The Basics

How NAV is determined

NAV is the market value of a scheme's holdings, less its liabilities and expenses, divided by the number of units outstanding. It is declared by the asset management company on every business day.

Purchases and redemptions are processed at the NAV applicable to the day and cut-off time at which funds and the request are received.

A lower NAV does not make a fund cheaper, and a higher NAV does not make it expensive — what matters is the percentage change in value, not the absolute figure.

Good To Know

Three practical points

Cut-off timings matter

The applicable NAV depends on when the request and the funds are received, not when you decide.

Dividends adjust NAV

Any payout reduces NAV by the amount distributed; it is not additional return.

Compare returns, not NAVs

Two schemes with different NAVs can deliver identical percentage returns.
